Jim returns to the CHEIA Conference to share his views on what we might expect to emerge over the horizon any time soon, and what the implications may be for the sector.


10:40 – 11:40 Session 2 - Student Mental Health and Wellbeing

Speaker: Geraldine Swanton, Shakespeare Martineau, Legal Director (Higher and Further Education)

Student mental health and wellbeing has become an area of increasing concern for universities, with the numbers of students declaring a mental health condition more than doubling in the last five years. Whilst the suicide rate amongst students has actually fallen since the 1990’s, there has been significant media interest in this in recent years, which has drawn attention to the actions universities are taking to address this risk. This session will take a look at some of the issues facing universities in relation to student mental health and wellbeing and their responsibilities for this under existing legislation.

Internationalisation has become an increasingly important feature of HE strategies worldwide. This session will explore key features of UK HE internationalisation strategies and, some of the risks associated with them which should be considered in strategy  development, implementation and ongoing review.

In this session, we focus on AI, which has grabbed the headlines in 2023. We attempt to look beyond the hype to look at the benefits that AI can deliver, as well as some of the potential pitfalls that we must avoid.

Speaker: Ben Connor, PwC, Director

Ben will be presenting the results of PwC’s annual HE Risk Register Benchmarking exercise. He will go into depth on the key themes arising from the report and discuss how this horizon scanning exercise can be used to inform the delivery of internal audit work across the sector.

In this session Simon takes the opportunity to share how JISC supports key elements of the technology infrastructure that the sector relies upon, as well as the innovations offered by JISC to assist institutions in accessing leading edge technologies.

Michael will provide his insights on the importance of fraud risk management at a Governance level, an update on the recent ‘Failure to prevent fraud’ offence, and his experience of HE fraud case studies.

  1. Key risks and audit plans: How does our portfolio of key risks, and our audit plans map on to the common themes identified in the morning session? Do internal and external providers look at risk with a similar lens and if so, what can we learn from each other. 
  2. Culture: Are we addressing culture as effectively as we could be? What can or should we be doing better? What have we learned from our efforts to date?
