CHEIA July 2022 Update

14 July 2022      Nkechi Ijeomah, CHEIA Administrator

Message from the Chair
As yet another academic year draws to a close, I find it difficult not to think back to this time three years ago.  Who would have thought that the extent of change that has happened since then was possible, whether we take a global, national, higher education or internal audit perspective. In actual fact, we need only look at the first few days of this month to see the pace and extent of change with no less than 3 ministers in charge of the UK Department of Education in as many days.
Looking back a little further, it is also important to recognise that 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the formation of CHEIA. Few, if any, of us are likely to have been working in HE in 1992 (some may have been students or aspiring to be students), but again, there has been considerable change over those 30 years, not least being the transition of HEFCE (one of CHEIA’s early sponsors) into OfS.
However, the end of one academic year also marks the start of a new one and for CHEIA, that can only mean the annual conference. You will find more details in the links below, but you can expect the theme of change to be prominent in the programme as we look forward to the changes that we might see in the future and consider how we as internal auditors or others involved in the commissioning and oversight of internal audit can become involved in making change effective. I look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible to the event in September.

CHEIA Conference 2022 – 7 & 8 September 2022
We’re very pleased that our dedicated microsite for the 2022 Conference is now live on https://www.cheia.ac.uk/cheia-annual-conference-2022/. You can check it out right away for the full details about the sessions and speakers, the virtual platform for the event and how you can take advantage of the discount available for multiple delegates from the same organisation. The event should deliver great benefits for internal audit, risk management and governance professionals as well as members of Audit Committees so invite as many of your colleagues as possible. Feel free to email the CHEIA administrator on contact@cheia.ac.uk if you have any enquiries.

CHEIA Showcase – Conference Special
CHEIA is so much more than an annual conference with formal and informal events throughout the year. We continue to make sure that there is something for everyone within CHEIA. So whether you are new to the sector, new to the world of internal audit, or have more years in HE internal audit than you care to remember, you can find out more during the CHEIA Showcase session about how we can support your needs or how you can influence CHEIA to ensure that your needs are supported and so that you will continue to get the most from your membership.

How to Book Your Place for the Conference

  • Bookings should be made via the CHEIA website: cheia.ac.uk
  • Delegate Rates & Discounts: the delegate rate for the first booking per organisation is £250.00 plus VAT. This delegate will receive a discount code which additional delegates must use in order to be charged the lower rate of £195.00 plus VAT when they book.
  • Payment & Invoices: payment by card is preferred.

If you are unable to pay by card, you can continue with your booking and request an invoice at the point of payment; you will need to provide a purchase order number to complete the booking. Please ensure that the vendor for your Purchase Order is Professional HE Services Ltd (PHES), not CHEIA.  Invoices will be issued by PHES. For multiple delegates, please try and provide one purchase order for your organisation so that you will receive one invoice. If you have any further questions or any issues with registration, please email the Administrator on contact@cheia.ac.uk.

Bitesize Sessions
Once again, our thanks to all those who have helped CHEIA to present the sessions and to all members for joining. Since the very first session on ‘Internal Audit’s Role during and after the Pandemic’ held on 28 April 2020, we have had about seventeen sessions. Cyber-attacks, Data Analytics, Fraud, GDPR, ESG, Risk Management and Staff Wellbeing are just a few of the subjects that have been covered.
This is also an appeal to all members to use the Bitesize platform to share with other members your own experiences, lessons learnt or any other subject dear to your heart. Please email the Administrator on contact@cheia.ac.uk if you want to take up this opportunity or if you have any suggestions about sessions or speakers. Look out for forthcoming sessions in October 2022.

Quality Assessment Exercise 2022
The most up-to-date version of the QA Tool (the Spider) is available on the website. As you know, CHEIA promotes this Tool for members to use for quality assessment, either as a self-assessment to meet the internal quality review requirements or for a peer-review to meet the external quality review requirements. For those undertaking an assessment this year, another survey will be available in mid-August for you to submit anonymised results which we will share with participants for benchmarking.

Subscription Renewal
All members will soon be receiving an email from the PHES Membership Team (membership@phes.ac.uk), with further information about the 2022/23 subscription renewal process. The email will be directed to your organisation’s main contact for CHEIA, or to the Finance Director of your institution where you have other subscriptions within the PHES Group (CHEIA, BUFDG, UHR, AUDE, HESA, AULP and CUBO). Kindly look out for this email and act on it or liaise with the relevant person in your organisation to ensure that this is actioned. As always, thank you for being a valued member of CHEIA; we appreciate that very much and hope that you will continue to work with us as we shape our HE internal audit network. If you require any further information, please email the Administrator contact@cheia.ac.uk.

CHEIA Elections 2022
It is our usual practice to invite nominations, conduct elections, if necessary and announce the new Executive at the AGM. We will again be inviting nominations to the posts of Chair, Treasurer, Regional Representative for the North and Regional Representative for the South. Further information will be available in August.
